This came in at work today. ‘08 Ranger, FX4, 4.0 SOHC, vinyl floors, 68k miles. Is it bad that I want this truck........ a lot? It just looks so right. Doesn’t drive amazing, but still kind of fun. They’re asking WAY too much for it, but still a cool little truck.

Wonder what the reliability record on these things is ... there are Toyotas that are impossible to kill. But that’s just me ....

The two tone seats look really cool

I used to hate on Rangers but now I find myself wanting one. They’re reasonably comfortable and can handle approximately 100% of the big stuff I get from Lowes or Walmart or bicycles etc

mine’s almost like that. it’s an ‘11 Sport 4x4, same vinyl floor covering, but mine has manual windows, manual locks, and no buttons on the steering wheel at all.

From what I’ve heard, the 4.0 is hit or miss. Not totally sure though.

Agreed!

Yeah, I don’t like a lot of the older ones, but the later ones from this generation look killer, IMO.

AW YEAH. That’s literally how I’d option pretty much any truck. I love low option trucks.

the only way it could have been better for me is if it had a stick, but when buying used beggars can’t be choosers.

My dad drives an 06 flareside extra cab v6 auto 4x4 with like 40k miles. Truck is mint.

I have a ‘94 with 265,000 miles. Hard to kill is an appropriate description.

Rangers are shockingly good trucks. The OHC v6 can be troublesome with age, however. Some people put like 300,000 miles on that engine without problem, but the guy standing next to him grenaded a rear cam chain (yeah, they have those) at like 80,000. I’ve owned the old pushrod 4 liter and it was reliable and quiet, if a breathless at speed.

Yeah, gotcha there. I’m personally cool with an auto, but on a Ranger, I’d prefer a manual.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve heard about the 4.0. Hit or miss reliability at best.

And, holy shit, I just read about the 4.0's timing chain setup. WTF were they thinking??? What benefit is there to that???

Other than that, yeah, I’ve always liked Rangers for the most part. Not a fan of the ‘93-’00 ones, but otherwise they’re killer.

I think the reason they did that with the cam chains was so they could cheap-out and only design one cylinder head to use on both banks. Because the “mirror” function in Catia is too complicated? There’s literally no other reason to do it that I can think of.
